21-year-old Olympique Lyonnais and Norway striker Ada Hegerberg was presented with the award by her sister Andrine Hegerberg, who is also a professional footballer. She is also the only player in 2016’s UEFA competition to score more goals than Cristiano Ronaldo.
Hegerberg said, ‘‘Wow, it’s a surprise. It’s a huge honour to win, with such big-name footballers nominated. It’s really special, so many people from different cultures and countries voting for this trophy, it’s a huge motivation in itself.’’
Thousands of fans across the world cast their votes to give Hegerberg the title, who also beat Canada captain Christine Sinclair, Brazil forward Marta Viera da Silva, Sweden keeper Hedvig Lindahl and Germany midfielder Melanie Behringer.
